Daily Positive Affirmations
Posted on
Affirmations have become increasingly popular over the years. So, what exactly are affirmations and where did affirmations originate from? Maybe you seeking tips on writing an affirmation?
Here is a brief overview:
What Are Affirmations?
In general affirmations are positive statements. Positive statements that you would tend to make about yourself with an aim to make that same statement a perceived reality. The main aim is to repeat the affirmation or positive statement to yourself consistently and repeatedly for a period time until it sinks in.
Affirmations can be spoken aloud or written down, so you can focus on them and make them part of your daily routine.
An affirmation is usually formed of powerful words for example ‘I Am Strong’, ‘I Am Calm’ and ‘I Am Enough’ and powerful positive statements. "I am" is a classic start to an affirmation because ‘I am’ gives you ownership of the sentence.
When done consistently, affirmations may be considered incredibly helpful in changing our mindset with an aim to create meaningful transformation in our lives.
When you repeat and affirm a positive statement to yourself, such as "I am Strong" or "I am successful," it reinforces that thought in your mind like a form of self-hypnosis. Your mind is taking it in as an instruction from you directly. Your mind does not know or care whether a statement is true or false it only knows you believe it to be true.
By using repetition, it reinforces the positive statement (the mind does like repetition) and if you combine a positive feeling or emotion with the statement then it may become even more powerful.
Writing down your affirmations can further help the statements to embed even more strongly because this method forces us into action and makes it more real rather than just a thought.
The History of Affirmations
Affirmations are not a recent thing, in fact there has been evidence of affirmations being used for many years. Although, there is no exact knowledge of when affirmations actually began, there is evidence of affirmations dating back to ancient times. Where they were said to be used by Ancient Egyptians in rituals for healing and protection as early as 2000 BC. There is also evidence that affirmations were being used by the Ancient Greeks more than 2,000 years ago with aim to support general well-being. Affirmations have also been documented in many different cultures and religious texts.
More recently you may recognise affirmations from the works of the late Louise Hay. Where Louise Hay became well known for promoting positive affirmations, running workshops, writing self-help books, and recording Affirmation audios.
Louise Hay also famously created useful affirmation cards. Affirmations cards have also become popular because these cards can easily be placed in positions all around the home to be always easily visible and can also slip into your handbag for you to come across when rummaging through or popped in your lunch box to as a reminder when at work. It can also be fun to select a new affirmation card for each day.
